Properties:
This powerhouse of a crystal balances physically and energetically, and shifts and reorganises both thought patterns and energetic patterns throughout the body. It brings warmth, light and expansion to each individual Chakra, and a feeling of inner expansion in general. Epidote can help to relieve tension, increase circulation and stimulate muscle tone. It strengthens and supports the immune and lymphatic systems, and particularly acts as an aid in balancing thyroid function. Epidote can be used as a detoxifier, especially if taken as a gem elixir. It also stimulates brain activity, increases mental faculties and aids clear thinking, and as such can be used in the treatment of dyslexia. it is very directional, so may be used as a wand, and is also very centring if worn vertically as a pendant, but wear only for short periods of time as it can be over-stimulating.

Mineralogy:
Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron silicate hydroxide. It occurs in low grade regionally metamorphosed rocks, and as the result of hydrothermal alteration of plagioclase feldspar. Epidote forms columnar prisms and thick tabular crystals, often of a distinctive pistachio green, and displays strong pleochroism. It can also be acicular, granular and massive. Unakite is massive epidote with other material, usually pink feldspar, and is a popular mineral for jewellery and carvings.

History and Tradition:
Named in 1801 by Rene Just Haüy from the Greek επιδοσιζ epidosis, meaning “increase”, in allusion to the crystal characteristic of one longer side at the base of the prism.
