Phantom quartz occurs when, due to environmental conditions such as drought, a crystal stops growing for a period of time. This period can last millions of years, during which time a deposit forms on it. As conditions change, the crystal begins to grow again, encasing the deposit in new growth, which presents as a “phantom” of the crystal at a smaller size. This can happen many times, resulting in several layers. It is used to access the past, put it into perspective, and look forward to new growth. There are many different types of phantom, including chlorite (green), lithium (mauve), plus white and amethyst. Each type has different additional attributes assigned to it.
