Not a mineral, strictly speaking, amber is an organic resin from the now extinct coniferous tree, Pina Succinifera, which existed in the Eocene Epoch of the Tertiary period, about 50 million years ago, and comes mainly from the Baltic, although there are a number of other deposits throughout the world. Amber was the first precious stone noted in human history, and has been used as a healing stone and protective amulet for at least 7000 years. It becomes electrically charged when rubbed vigorously with a cloth, causing it to attract small particles, and archeologists now believe this made it an object of magic for ancient man. It bestows good luck and happiness, grounds higher and mental energies, and acts as a powerful healer and cleanser, having the ability to absorb pain and negative energy. In the Middle Ages, garnet was known as carbuncle, which was reputed to "glow in the dark". Iolite is associated with the element water. It is balancing in general, and particularly balances male-female energy. As such, it can add harmony to relationships, as well as aiding self-acceptance. It promotes leadership and allows us to embrace responsibility. It is considered to be useful in stimulation of visions and dream work, and is used in this capacity in Shamanic healing. Iolite allows us to maintain a state of awareness while in meditation, and enhances mediumistic abilities and spiritual communication. Iolite crystals exhibit the phenomenon pleochroism, where there is a colour variation in relation to the direction within the crystal. Most Iolite on the market is found in shards rather than intact crystals, but still has the characteristic, and when used in healing, the crystal can be strongly directional even when the symmetry of the crystal is not visible. Pyrite means "fire stone" as it creates sparks when struck, and has been used for thousands of years as a means of starting fires. Historically it was considered a magic stone and a stone of protection, and was worked into amulets. It encourages self-realisation, showing us both our light and dark sides. It is also useful in clarification, on both emotional and diagnostic healing levels, and for uncovering suppressed memories. It is considered still to be a stone of protection, and can shield one against negative energy on many levels. As the crystals form cubically, it can also be used as a grounding stone (the cube being a symbol of Earth). Many believe it has the blessing of abundance.

Quartz (silica) is the main component of glass, and can symbolise clarity. It is used in computer chips, and as such transmits knowledge. The crystals have no centre of symmetry, which creates a polarity (piezoelectricity); slices taken at appropriate thicknesses and orientation are used for controlling frequencies in radio components and watches.

Clear Quartz is arguably the most important crystal in crystal healing. Many crystal healers use quartz points as wands to transmit energy, generators to enhance energy, or control crystals, the healer's closest ally in some schools of healing, directing the healing session almost like a conductor with a baton.

Clear quartz clears and focuses the mind, to aid both decision-making and meditation. It enhances and strengthens the healing properties of other crystals, and directs and amplifies healing energy to the area in which it is needed. Girasole (sunflower) quartz originates from Madagascar, and is clear quartz with microscopic rutile crystals in it, giving it a milky sheen like moonstone, the soft feeling of rose quartz. The energy is very feminine and gentle, with a feeling of warmth, and has a mood lifting affect. It is nurturing, and gently creates a heart connection with the Divine, bringing pure white light into the body.

A quartz crystal with a mauve or purple coating, due to the presence of lithium. Lithium quartz is used to calm and balance, and is particularly useful in treating some cases of mental illness, such as manic-depression.

Clear or smoky quartz, containing fine strands of rutile. Rutile is titanium ore. Rutile quartz connects the Solar Plexus with the Crown Chakra, or Base Chakra when it is smoky. The tensile strength of the titanium gives an air of authority combined with power, and clear quartz bestows clarity. It engenders new hope and has an anti-depressive effect, as it allows us to feel more in control of our lives. This is an excellent stone for those suffering depression.

This stone is very grounding and protective. It is an excellent pain killer, especially for back problems, as it also strengthens the spine. It can dampen electromagnetic stress, and block geopathic stress, and acts as a mild antidepressant. Smoky quartz is useful for letting go of old unhealthy attachments, people, places and situations, and helpful for the end of a relationship or in cases of bereavement.

Much of the smoky quartz on the market is poor-grade clear quartz that has been irradiated. Although natural gamma radiation in the earth's mantle is responsible for the smoky colour, when exposed to a high dose for a short period of time, the energy of the crystal is fragmented, making it useless in crystal healing. At Rebel Angel, we are careful to select only natural smoky quartz, and if we have any doubts, we will say so.

The vibration of these crystals is very high but also very calming, so it is excellent for clarity, understanding and concentration, as well as keeping specific areas of a room clear of unwanted energy. It can be used to cleanse other crystals and crystal jewellery simply by laying them on the selenite, usually overnight, and can also be used to recharge crystals that feel a bit "flat", by directing the point of the spear towards the crystal, for a period of time. However, completely clear examples can be very heady, and it is recommended that you make very sure you are grounded, or work in combination with a grounding crystal when using it. Super Seven is a "Melody" stone, and all information currently written on the subject originates from her.
